Parumala Perunnal

Parumala Perunnal is an important festival of the Christian community celebrated at Parumala St. Peter's & St. Paul's Orthodox Church located in Thiruvalla, Pathanamthitta District of Kerala. This is an annual festival held to commemorate the death anniversary of Bishop Mar Gregorios Metropolitan, the first canonized saint of the Malankara Orthodox Church of Kerala.

Way of excecution and activities Parumala Perunnal

Parumala is a small island village in river Pampa renowned for the presence of the Tomb of Parumala Thirumeni. Parumala Perunnal is celebrated in the month of November and during this week long auspicious occasion a grand feast is organized and rituals is performed. Since the mortal remains of the Saint is entombed in this church the commemoration or Orma Perunnal day is celebrated with feast, special prayers and rituals. A major event of this festival is the Grand procession taken from one part of the town to another and attended by thousands of devotees offering prayers to seek blessings from the deity. Parumala Perunnal celebration is a true eye candy for the devotees and during the festival life and routine of the region comes to a standstill with the local people engaging themselves for the preparation of the festival. The Christian communities from far and near come here for worship during this festival and like all other cultural and traditional festivals the church ground gets filled with vendors from all parts of the state selling all kinds of things from food to utensils. Every day evening for the entire week cultural events are held in the church ground during the festival.
