Parumala Church

Despite being landlocked, the region has moderate climate, and is similar to the climatic conditions in the other part of the state. The church is located on the banks of the Pamba River, and hence has a fertile soil which is the best for cultivation. 50% of the district’s lands are covered by forests.

About Parumala Church

Parumala is a small village in an island located on the River Pamba, and in the district of Pathanamthitta. Parumala Church is a Syrian Jacobite church, and is a prominent worship centre for the Malankara. The church can hold as much as 2000 worshippers. Parumala Church is also known as St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s orthodox church.

The church hosts an annual festival every year during the month of November, known as Ormaperunnal. During this festival, the christians pay homage to Mar Gregorios, who is also known as Parumala Thirumeni because he helped the poor and the helpless, irrespective of their religion and caste.

History or Myth

The history of the church goes back only as far as the beginning of 19th century. It was originally established as a seminary by Joseph Mar Dionysus on a 2 acres land. Later, towards the end of the 19th century,the responsibilities was handed to Mar Gregorios, who constructed a temporary church on the banks of Pamba river. A new church has been constructed in the year 1995 by the renowned architect Charles Correa.
