St. Thomas, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ, set out to India to spread the Good News, as per the instructions of Christ. Upon reaching Malayattoor, he faced aggression from the locals and escaped to a hill top, now known as Kurisumudi. Later, the locals found a glittering cross sign on a rock, and blood spewed from the rock when it was cracked. They were awed by this and made the spot a place of religious importance.
