Kadamattom Church

The town is situated in highland regions, and has a lot of fertile soil deposited by the floods that used to occur in the region. There is a beautiful river nearby, whose banks have a diverse species of flora and fauna. In addition to this, the church itself is surrounded by a lot of greenery, maintained by the authorities.

About Kadamattom Church

Located in the district of Ernakulam, this church is located exactly at Muvattupuzha. There are a lot of myths and beliefs surrounding this church which has attracted a lot of tourists. Kadamattom Kathanar, the successor of Mar Sabor was believed to possess supernatural powers, and performed sorcery. It is believed that he went to the underworld through a small well which is located near the church. It is also believed that he is capable of curing any form of illness and helped the poor, irrespective of their religion or caste.

Today, the inside of the church has the picture of Mar Sabor, the builder and founder of church, and a picture of Paulose, a.k.a., Kadamattom Kathanar. This church of Jesus Christ has a Persian Cross, whose arms are equal in length, and has inscriptions on it. The architecture of the church is Gothic. The interior of the church still retains the 9th century charm, and the door of the church has a fascinating wooden lock mechanism.

History or Myth

The history of Kadamattom Church goes back as far as the 9th century. The prominent family around that era was the ‘Kartha’ family. When one of the children in the family fell ill, the local doctors were incapable of identifying the ailment or cure for the child. Mar Sabor, an East Syrian monk, was visiting the area, and cured the child. Out of gratitude, the Kartha family gifted the monk with a land, where he built Kadamattom Church, one of the oldest churches of the country.
