Chettikulangara Sree Bagavathi temple is situated 4 km west of Mavelikkara town and 7 km north of Kayamkulam town. This temple is on the Kayamkulam - Thiruvalla Highway. The nearest railway station is Mavelikkara station and the nearest bus stations are Kayamkulam and Mavelikkara. The nearest airport is Nedumbassery International Airport in Cochin.

About Chettikulangara Devi Temple

Chettikulangara Sree Bagavathi temple is one of the oldest temples in situated in a place called Chettikulangra in Mavelikara taluk of Alappuzha District in Kerala. The most important aspect of this temple is that deity of the bagavathi appears in three forms in a day. In the morning she appears as Maha sarawathi, afternoon as Maha Lakshmi and in the evening as Bhadrakali. This unique transformation can also be seen in Kodungallur Devi temple which is why Chettikulangara Devi is considered as the daughter of Kodungallur Devi. The major festivals of this renowned bagavathi temple are the kumbha Bharani festival, Parayeduppu festival, Ethirappu Ulsavam and Aswathy Ulsavam. Kuthiyottam is one of the biggest events of this temple which is conducted during the Bharani festival. Kuthiyottam is a symbolic representation of human sacrifice performed in an art form. This structured and well choreographed art form with Kuthiyottam songs is a rare dravida folklore still practiced in Kerala.

History or Myth

History of Chettikulangara Sree Bagavathi temple state that this is one of the five temples made by lord Parasurama. This temple is considered to be about 1200 years old however historical evidences show that the sreekovil is about 500 years old and the chootamabalam is about 200 years. The main attraction of this temple is the Kathuvilakku made of granite which can accommodate more that 1000 wicks and considered the largest in the country. Chettikulangara Devi Temple is the second highest revenue earner for Travancore devasom board after sabrimala.
