Tali Temple, Kozhikode

Tali temple is situated in the heart of Kozhikode city and considered one of the oldest temples in Kerala patronized by the Zamorins. The nearest railway station is Kozhikode which is just 800 meters away and the nearest Airport is Karipur International Airport which is 22 kms away. The Zamorins are the present day trusties of this temple.

About Tali Temple, Kozhikode

The present day structure of the temple was built by the Zamorin Swami Thirumulpad in the 14th century. The construction of the temple is done with wood and laterite a remarkable example of Traditional Kerala Architecture. The sanctum of the temple is built in the shape of a chariot and the walls are adorned with highly decorative paintings and granite sculptures of Lord Shiva and his entourage, birds and animals mentioned in the puranas. The boundary wall of this temple is designed like an elephant belly or Anna palla with broad base and narrower neck at the top. Tali Shiva temple hosts the 7 day annual Revathi Pattathanam which is the main festival. A competition for scholars is conducted during this time which is attended by eminent scholars and philophers of Bharatiya Mimamsa, Prabhakara Mimamsa, Vedanta Mimamsa and Vyakarana. Five poojas and three shivelis are conducted every day and Namajapam is conducted every day in the evening.

History or Myth

It is believed that Tali Shiva temple was installed by Lord Parasurama towards the end of Dwaparayuga. This temple is one of the two Brahmanical temples patronized by the Zamorin the ruler of Kozhikode and till date it remains as an important spiritual and cultural centre. Some of the other deities inside the inner walls of the temple are the Tali Ganapathy, Thevarathil Ganapathy and Thrumandhakunnu Bhagavathy. This temple is the site for the 1911 anti caste agitation for the rights of low caste people.

    Tali temple is only 26 Kilometres away from the Calicut International airport. If coming by Air and landing in Karipur international Airport you can take a bus or taxi to the temple.

    You can reach by train from any part of India. Nearest railwaystation is Kozhikode Railway Station(1 Kilometer).

    BY ROAD
    Bus service is available from all the places in Kerala and luxury buses are available from most of the South Indian cities.Tali temple is well connected by road, rail and air. Buses ply from all parts of India to Calicut.
