St. Angelo's Fort or Kannur Fort

St. Angelo's Fort/ Kannur Fort preserves brilliant history of valor, war, manliness and sacrifice. This fort is located close to Kannur which is situated in Kerala, South India. Kannur Fort came into existence way back to 1505. Dom Francisco de Almeida founded this historical fort. He was the first Portuguese Viceroy in India. Many Indian rulers tried to capture this fort. Zamorin was the ruler in India. He tried to snatch the ownership of this fort. However, his attempt was in vain. Later, Afonso de Albuquerque plotted to supersede Dom Francisco and became the second Viceroy to take care of this fort. Dom Francisco detected the ill intention of Afonso and retaliated bravely. He arrested Albuquerque and his troops at this fort to end the impasse. Battle of Diu is the most important battle in Indian history. Dom Francisco was able to resist the invasion by overpowering Afonso. In 1663, Dutch army defeated Portuguese ruler to take possession of this gigantic fort. Hollandia, Frieslandia and Zeelandia are beautiful bastions of this Kannur fort. Unfortunately, original infrastructure of this popular fort was demolished. It was reconstructed and redecorated later. Finally, Kannur fort was handed over to Ali Raja of Arakkal in the year of 1772.Sant Angeleno Fort in Kerala has become a well known spot to travelers.
