About Sree Parassinikadavu Muthappan Temple

Parassinikadavu Muthappan is deity commonly worshipped in North Malabar. Unlike other temples the mode of worship here is through ritual enactment performed daily. People belonging to all religions, caste and nationalities are allowed to take part in the worship. The legend of the temple is that Muthappan was the adopted son of a feudal lord Ayyankara Naduvazhi who was a Brahmin. Muthappan broke all the rules of Brahmanism and stated eating cooked meat with the tribal in the area and once when his mother scolded him he showed his true cosmic figure and told them who he really is. After revealing himself he left his house and on the way he got associated with toddy. Once a toddy tapper saw him stealing toddy and he tried to attack with his bow and arrow but fell unconscious. Toddy tappers wife begged by him to spare his life by calling him Muthappa with respect and since then he came to be known a Muthappan. He made is abode near valapattanam river in Parassinikadavu.

History or Myth

Muthappan temple also known as Parassinikadavu Muthappan temple is situated on the banks of Valapattam river. The deity here is an embodiment of the divine powers of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu and the deity is also known as Thiruvappan and Vellattam. The ritual conducted in this temple is totally different and does not follow the satvik Brahminical form of worship as in other Hindu temples. The customary offerings to appease the deity of this temple are fish, meat and toddy.

  • Since the rituals are different take directions from a temple staff before worship.
  • If you are new to Kannur then take help from a police aid post or a tourist centre to reach the temple.
